What helps a Geshema scholar keep learning?

A long course of study depends on everyday stability: somewhere to live, healthcare, study materials and the means to sit examinations.

A path measured in years

The Geshema degree is a high qualification in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy in the Gelug tradition. The Tibetan Nuns Project describes a course of at least 17 years before candidates begin a four-year examination process. That makes sustained practical support relevant throughout the journey, rather than only at graduation.

The history also deserves precision. Kelsang Wangmo received a Geshe degree in 2011. A group of 20 Tibetan Buddhist nuns received Geshema degrees in December 2016, following the formal opening of the examination pathway to women. These are different milestones; saying simply that no woman earned the degree before 2016 would obscure that history.

What Maitri’s campaign is for

The Maitri Project’s GoFundMe campaign seeks $25,000 toward support for Buddhist nuns and Geshema scholars. Its stated purposes include housing, healthcare, study and examination needs. These are the campaign’s intended uses, not a promise that a particular gift purchases a degree or supports a fixed number of graduates.

Someone who cares about women’s education can begin by reading the full fundraiser and watching Maitri’s existing film. Someone who wants to help the story travel can introduce it to a study group or a friend who already values this work. An introduction should explain the person’s own interest without suggesting that another organization has endorsed Maitri.

Keep the route of the gift clear

This is an organizer-managed fundraiser created by Edward Sczudlo for The Maitri Project. Maitri is based in Topanga, California, while the communities it supports are abroad. GoFundMe’s displayed organizer location does not identify the location of a nunnery.

Visit the fundraiser for its current received-donation total and full explanation of intended support. The $25,000 target is a goal, not money already received. Questions about current project priorities can be directed to Maitri before deciding whether to give.
