A living historical legacy

More than six centuries.
Still being carried forward.

Sera Monastery was founded in Tibet in 1419 by Jamchen Choeje Shakya Yeshe, a disciple of Tsongkhapa. Its colleges, including Sera Mey, became centres for Buddhist scholarship, philosophical debate and contemplative practice.

Following exile, the Sera community re-established its monastic institutions at Bylakuppe in southern India in 1970. Preserving this heritage has depended on people making space for one another: teachers guiding students, communities sustaining study, and supporters providing the practical conditions for it to continue.

A home at Sera is part of that continuity. Supporting housing helps give monastic scholars a stable place from which to study, reflect and practise. A lasting gift connects the generosity of today with the learning of future generations.
