What happened
A mountain corridor was transformed in minutes.
The flood moved through northern Nepal with extraordinary force, isolating communities when help is needed most.
On 26 August, a catastrophic debris flow and flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridor near Nepal’s border with Tibet. Government and humanitarian agencies report severe damage across Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with downstream impacts extending farther.
Entire stretches of road and multiple bridges were washed away. That means relief is not only urgent—it is difficult to deliver.
The Maitri Project is opening a restricted emergency fund for monastics and monastic communities affected by this disaster. Needs and local distribution relationships are being confirmed as access and communications allow.

Why speed matters
When access disappears, small essentials become life-saving.
The USGS mapped a flood path stretching from the glacial collapse through populated river valleys. Humanitarian agencies report washed-out bridges and severely disrupted roads, leaving some communities difficult to reach.
