Supporting nuns in Nepal: care that sustains practice

The Maitri Project · September 13, 2026

Supporting a nun’s life of study and practice means attending to everyday needs as well as spiritual aspirations. Healthcare, a secure place to live, and access to education are part of the foundation on which that life depends.

Responding to needs in Nepal

In Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, The Maitri Project has helped provide diabetes medication for monastics, including nuns. This healthcare support is one concrete expression of our commitment to people who preserve living wisdom traditions.

Across Asia, our wider support for nuns and women pursuing the Geshema degree includes housing, healthcare, study, and examination costs. Needs differ between communities; our work responds through relationships with the practitioners and institutions we serve.

How to take part

For readers who want to understand the women behind this work, Rise of the Geshe-Ma offers an introduction to advanced Buddhist scholarship. To contribute, support Maitri’s nuns and Geshema program or read about our healthcare assistance in Nepal.
